Taking measurements of a room doesn’t have to be a lengthy task. If you have the right tools, you can cut the process short. For our convenience, there are apps and other devices that can help us with the measuring. Keep in mind that these different tools have different levels of measurement accuracy, so depending on your need, some might not be adequate.

I will start by talking about a few of the highest rated apps on the market, and then I will talk about a couple of other measuring tools.

Apps:

Magicplan

This is a free app with purchasing options and is available for iOS and Android. It creates floor plans using the camera of your phone or tablet and allows you to digitally furnish them. The product description states that Magicplan estimates the needed amount of materials for construction and renovation work, among other features.

CamToPlan PRO

This app is available for iOS (US$4.99) and Android (US$3.89). It measures distances, surfaces and draws floor plans using your camera. As you move the camera around, you can see the tape measure on the screen. It can be used with either Metric or Imperial units, and it measures distances horizontally and vertically. As the product description states, there is no need to move furniture for measurements.

RoomScan Pro

This is a free app with a purchasing option and is available for iOS. Its product description states that it is the only app with three ways to get a floor plan: touch phone against walls, augmented reality scanning and draw manually & use laser. It also states that RoomScan Pro can scan building exteriors, yards and gardens with the ExteriorScan & PlotScan features. Measurements can be displayed in meters or feet.

So, I tested these three apps with the purpose of measuring indoor spaces, and the conclusion of my experiments is that they are very handy for drawing approximate floor plans, but if you need precision on the measurements they are not adequate. My best horizontal measuring results were obtained using Magicplan and RoomScan Pro.

Other measuring devices:

If you are like my husband, you love a home gadget. Actually, now that I thought about it, several people in my family love home gadgets. So, if you are one of those gadget appreciators, you will enjoy these tools: measuring tape with laser and measuring wheels. They not only measure distances, but many of them can also calculate areas and volumes.

Measuring tapes with laser speed up the process of measuring, have a high level of accuracy, and do not require someone holding the tape measure on the other end to help to keep it in place.

The options available on the market vary in price, and features but I have listed some of the more affordable ones since my objective is to present measuring options for homeowners’ personal use. The three following models have good ratings online, and their prices range between US$25 and US$55:

This laser measure is able to hold 20 different historical values.

It has a memory function that makes it easy to read the last 20 records.

Last but not least, let me talk about measuring wheels.

Measuring wheels are mostly used for measuring outside areas, like your yard for example, but can also be used for horizontal inside measuring. These tools are easily operated and great for measuring very long distances. Some models have a high level of accuracy and allow you to switch between Imperial and Metric units. Another good feature of measuring wheels is that you don’t need to bend your knees to get measurements.

I hope that among these tools, you will find one that will meet your needs!
